If you have some idea about Darwin’s theory of evolution, you can understand the concept of beauty and the high degree of importance attributed to it. Beauty is nature’s mechanism of acting from a distance in order to achieve one of the most important steps in evolution: reproduction! Hence, whatever pleases our senses is beautiful to us.
However, we are intellectual beings. If “beautiful” is the word you use to compliment your girlfriend, to describe the sunset, the new iPhone and your girlfriend’s new shoes, chances are, you are failing at natural selection. You ask why? Well, it’s because you are dull, boring and predictable. And hence you are reducing your own probability of survival, because hey! Only the fittest survive! And one needs to be intellectually charming in order to survive the rat race of evolution in the 21st century.
I present to you 11 words that should be replacing the word “beautiful” in your vocabulary.
Incorporating new words in your conversations makes you sound more intelligent (no, you won’t sound pretentious; if you do, cover it up with your charm), and new words are conversation starters. Additionally, learning new words has several benefits too! A study conducted in 2014 found that learning new words triggers the same reward system in the brain that goes off during drug use or while having sex. Need any more reasons to use this list?
So how many of these are you going to incorporate in your vocab? Let me know if this helped you impress someone 🙂
